Tesla: Carmaker told to pay ex-worker $3.2m over racism case

The payment has been slashed from the original award of $137m when the case was heard in 2021.

            Tesla, the electric car manufacturer, has been ordered to pay $3.2m in compensation to a former employee who claimed that he experienced racist abuse and discrimination while working at the company's factory in Fremont, California. The ex-worker, Owen Diaz, alleged that he was subjected to racial slurs and threats of violence by colleagues, and that management failed to address his complaints. A jury found Tesla liable for discrimination and harassment in November 2022, and awarded Diaz $137m in damages. The company appealed the verdict, but a judge upheld the ruling and reduced the damages to $3.2m. Tesla has stated that it is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace.
